WHERE ARE THE HEROES – PT 1

WHERE ARE THE HEROES

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A ninja? A pirate? A princess? I’m sure at some point the prospect of becoming a superhero sounded pretty awesome after reading a comic book or watching a superhero movie. From the age of five years old, my little brother wanted to be Spider-Man. Then Batman. Then Ironman. To this day, at age 13, he is still a huge fan of comic books and superheroes. And you know what makes me sick? People who tell him to get his head out of the clouds, or tell him that his dream is unrealistic. Guess what? That kid is onto something.

We live in a weak society of people who believe superheroes cannot exist.

Let me pose a question to you. Think of the name of someone living today who is an example of a hero. Maybe you can give one or two examples. But if you expand that to include characters from fictional universes, names come to mind faster than you can say them out loud. Superman, Thor, The Hulk, Jedi from Star Wars, Characters from The Lord of the Rings- fictional examples of people who have traits and values that make them heroes. So why isn’t the real world saturated with characters like this? We live in a weak society of people who believe superheroes cannot exist, and that worldview is being pressed on today’s children.

The world we live in does not produce heroes like it used to

My 13 year old brother is going to be a superhero some day. You could say he already is. He realizes what he needs to do to make himself into a superhero, and he chooses a life in which his dream can become a reality. He pushes himself to the limit to hone his abilities. He teaches and sets an example for other kids, even if they are older or younger than himself. He is an inspiration to me, as well as many other people. He is a real world superhero.

The world we live in does not produce heroes like it used to. Sometimes, to find a true example of a hero, we can draw power from adapting the qualities that make fictional characters or legends great. Who’s to say that you are not the next superman? All you need to do is make it happen.
